Erika Edwards rang up 21 points and 12 rebounds as Redmond, minus three key players, erased that doubt with an impressive 50-45 victory over Lake Oswego, Oregon's third-ranked team, in Saturday's Les Schwab Hoop Challenge at Bellevue Community College. Edwards, who will play at Sacramento State University next season, sank 8 of 13 shots for the tradition-rich Mustangs and added three steals and three assists. The Mustangs (1-1) benefited from the season debut of senior guard Hannah Leuning, who played point guard and had two clinching free throws with 19.4 seconds left for the final margin. "We're not at full strength, so this was a good win for us," said Redmond coach Pat Bangasser, who was without injured 6-footers Hannah Tews and Katie Kruger and 5-8 guard Rachel Houser. "We were looking for a quality game. We handled their pressure well." Redmond opened the season with a 61-49 home loss to Liberty of Issaquah on Nov. 30. Lake Oswego (3-1) trailed most of the game and was down 40-33 before reeling off eight consecutive points for a 41-40 lead on Robyn Barton's turnaround jumper with 2:55 left. The Eagles turned the ball over a school record-low four times and outscored Redmond 56-47 to claim the championship in the Oh Boy! Oberto Christmas Classic at Bothell High. "That's amazing," Issaquah senior Melissa Richardson said. "I don't think anyone's had a game like that, not on our team." Issaquah (7-3) had 14 steals and forced 21 Redmond turnovers while winning its fourth straight. The Eagles also enjoyed a 17-6 advantage in offensive rebounds, which led to an overwhelming 59-36 edge in shots taken. "Credit their defense, but we need to take care of the ball," Redmond coach Pat Bangasser said. "They shot 23 more shots from the field. They make a quarter of 'em, they win." Redmond (4-3) finished runner-up for the second straight year. Senior standout Erika Edwards missed the team's two tournament games with a sprained ankle, but is expected back when the Mustangs resume KingCo 4A play Wednesday. Junior guard Aubrey Jensen scored 17 points and Richardson had 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals to pace a balanced Issaquah effort. The extra shots helped the Eagles overcome 35.6-percent shooting while Redmond fired at a 50-percent clip. "That's awesome," Issaquah coach Kathy Gibson said. The Mustangs got a double dose of what the Vikings do best. In its most complete game of the season, 10th-ranked Inglemoor jumped the passing lanes with fullcourt pressure to score 24 points on 24 turnovers and blast tradition-rich Redmond 66-39 Wednesday night. Sarah Ena, a 6-foot junior, scored 22 points to lead the Vikings (10-2 overall, 4-2 Central Division) to their first win over the Mustangs (7-5, 4-2 East) in the four-year tenure of Inglemoor coach John Augustavo. Ashley Brown, a 6-foot senior, scored 16 points for Inglemoor, which won for the eighth time in nine games. "I've been waiting for one of these games," Augustavo said of his team's complete game. "It was nice to put it all together. Any time you beat Redmond, it's a good win. They're a good team and they're well-coached. "We were a little less selfish in this game than we have been and we were moving the ball better." The Vikings led by as many as 31 in the fourth quarter, and shortly before the lead grew that big, Augustavo subbed in a new five with 4:40 left in the game. All 11 Inglemoor players scored thanks to a new team-first attitude. "Coach is developing everyone on the floor," said Ena, who also had eight rebounds and five steals. Erika Edwards, a 6-foot senior committed to Sacramento State, led Redmond with 16 points and nine rebounds, but failed to score during the second quarter, when Inglemoor took control with an 18-3 run. "We didn't have any answer tonight," Redmond coach Pat Bangasser said. "They're a good team." Redmond played without two of its top players in 6-foot junior post Hannah Tews (disciplinary reasons) and junior guard Christine Isherwood (illness). Both are likely to play Friday. Ballard coach Karen Blair said her team took a few steps backward Friday night, but still played hard. What else could either coach say after Redmond's 46-36 victory in a game defined by mistakes and missed shots? The teams combined for 46 fouls, 37 turnovers and 73 missed shots. Both coaches agreed that tough defenses were the main causes of the miscues. It was obvious that Blair, in her first season at Ballard, has brought a defensive mentality to the Beavers. "We're competing every night," Blair said. "We're working on our confidence, and that takes time. Our girls are working hard, but tonight we struggled hanging onto the ball." Foul trouble proved costly to Ballard. The Mustangs outscored the Beavers 24-7 at the free-throw line. Redmond (8-5 overall) improved to 5-2 atop the KingCo 4A East Division, tied with Skyline. Ballard (8-5, 3-4) is third in the West Division. After Ballard hit its first shot attempt, both teams went ice cold. Redmond didn't make a field goal until 1:22 remained in the first quarter, while Ballard missed its next eight shots. Redmond led 19-15 at halftime, but the cold shooting continued. The Mustangs made only one field goal in 16 attempts in the third quarter, but still outscored Ballard 8-7 in the period. Despite the goofs, the game remained close with Redmond leading 27-22 heading into the fourth quarter. Redmond finally found some offensive rhythm, thanks to some nifty passing under the basket. Junior Lina Perugini made two touch passes under the basket to sophomore Katie Kruger, who had 10 points. A 3-pointer by Ballard's Charlotte Shannon with 40 seconds left made it 41-36, but Redmond clinched it with three trips to the free-throw line. We finally started to share the ball in the second half," Bangasser said. "We had some nice assists in the fourth quarter, especially from Katie (Kruger), but Ballard's defense definitely threw us off."
