Game 4 Summary:  SEATTLE -- Kirsten Thompson wasn't sure what lulled her Monroe girls basketball team into its sluggish start yesterday. Maybe it was the morning opening tip. Or the sleepy drive to Seattle. Or that the Bearcats were playing their second game in less than 24 hours. But she had no doubt what woke them up. "A realization by me and my teammates that they're beating us," Thompson said. "We don't like that." So after shuffling through the first 18 minutes of their nonleague encounter with Redmond yesterday, the Bearcats went to work. And when they were done, Monroe had overcome a 15-point second-half deficit and maintained its unbeaten record with a 68-65 victory in the Les Schwab Hoop Challenge at Brougham Pavilion. "We started moving our feet on defense and getting in the passing lanes," said Monroe coach Alan Dickson of a comeback that began with a 13-3 run to close the third quarter. "We've actually been starting slow, but our bench is really deep." More of a factor yesterday, however, was Thompson. The 6-foot-6 Arizona State-bound center scored a season-high 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. She made 13 of 15 shots, including a three-pointer from about 25 feet that tied the score at 45 at the end of the third quarter, and hit four of five free-throw attempts. "We tried to do everything except bite her," said Redmond coach Pat Bangasser of Thompson, noting that 22 of Monroe's 27 field goals came inside the key. Monroe (5-0) shot 74 percent (17 of 23) in the second half and 61 percent (27 of 44) for the game. Erika Edwards had 20 points, and Idaho-bound point guard Mackenzie Flynn added 17 points, five rebounds and five steals for Redmond (2-2).
Monroe - Tone, Battle 1, Morton 7, C. Drivstuen 12, Heilman 5, D Drivstuen 6, Thompson 33, Muhammad 2, Hopkins 2.
Redmond - Isherwood, Perugini, Tews 2, Radtke 9, Flynn 17, Betteridge 11, Olson 6, Edwards 20, Leuning.

Game 5 Summary: KIRKLAND — Senior point guard Mackenzie Flynn makes everything click for the 10th-ranked Redmond High School girls basketball team. Everything starts with Flynn. And, last night, everything seemingly finished with junior forward Erika Edwards. Edwards fell one point short of the Mustangs' school record with a career-high 34 points and Flynn missed her school mark for assists by one, with 13, as Redmond beat Lake Washington 73-61 last night in a KingCo 4A Conference opener at Lake Washington.
"Our passes were just amazing tonight," said the versatile, 6-foot-1 Edwards, who shot 13 of 21 from the floor, including 5 of 9 from three-point land, and grabbed 10 rebounds. "If I was open, Mackenzie or someone else saw me and hit me. She helps me all the time." Redmond (3-2 overall, 1-0 East Division) bounced back after last Saturday's 68-65 loss to Monroe in the Les Schwab Classic. Lake Washington (3-2, 0-1 East Division) lost for the second game in a row after opening the season with three victories. The school scoring record nearly fell even though Edwards had no idea she was close to it. "It's like someone pitching a no-hitter," Redmond coach Pat Bangasser said. "I wasn't going to tell her." Edwards scored from all over the floor, but primarily on baseline jumpers. The school record of 35 points was set by Kim Campbell on Dec. 14, 1999 and equaled by Emily Ashbaugh on Feb. 11, 2000. "I had some good shooting during warmups, so I just let it go in the game," said Edwards. "No matter where you are, Mackenzie knows where you are."

It was far from a one-player show for the Mustangs. Flynn, who has committed to Idaho, provided 15 points, six rebounds and six steals in addition to her 13 assists. "Mackenzie sees the floor as well as any high-school point guard I've ever seen, and she can deliver," Bangasser said. Redmond led by as many as 20 points at 54-34 late in the third quarter, but the Kangaroos kept the Mustangs hopping to the finish. LW cut the Redmond lead to 58-47 on Megan Ferguson's three-pointer with 6:12 left in the game, but the 'Stangs stretched the lead back to 71-55 in less than four minutes. "Lake Washington wouldn't give up," Bangasser said. "It was like a track meet. I told the girls it would be like that and tried to condition them for something like this. (First-year) coach (Marisa) Craine should be proud of how they fought." Ferguson and Megan Sanders, both juniors, led the Kangs with 11 points each and sophomore Claire Fox added 10.

Redmond - Isherwood, Ball, Perugini, Tews 2, C. Fishel, Radtke 5, Flynn 15, Betteridge 9, Olson 2, Edwards 34, Leuning 6.  Lake Washington - Phippard 7, Rondel 4, Ferguson 11, Allen 8, Harwood 1, Sanders 11, Sacco 9, Fox 10.

Colleen Betteridge added 12 points, and Mackenzie Flynn 10 for Redmond (4-2), which trailed 13-9 after one quarter and led just 23-22 at halftime. Holly Rubert scored 16 points to lead Gig Harbor (4-2), which was denied a second straight berth in the Oh Boy! Oberto title game. The Tides placed second last season.

Game 7 Summary: SEATTLE -- The Snohomish girls basketball team hasn't solved its issue with slow starts. But the Panthers sure know how to finish. Seventh-ranked Snohomish erased a series of double-digit deficits to post a 50-49 win over 10th-ranked Redmond in the girls championship of the Oh Boy! Oberto Christmas Classic at Edmundson Pavilion. The win was the seventh straight for the Panthers (7-1), who found themselves behind 17-5 barely five minutes into the game and trailed by 10 midway through the third quarter. "We kind of tend to do that," said Daesha Henderson, a junior guard who scored 12 points and added six rebounds for Snohomish. "It's not a good habit, but, honestly, the whole time I was thinking, 'We can do it.' "
"I think we got a little tired in the fourth quarter," Redmond coach Pat Bangasser said. "I called a couple of timeouts just to get them some rest." Mackenzie Flynn, who led the Mustangs with 15 points, and teammate Erika Edwards (12 points) both played all 32 minutes yesterday after going all the way in Wednesday's win over Gig Harbor. The freshest player on the floor may have been Henderson, who sat out much of the Panthers' win over Issaquah on Wednesday with foul trouble. The Panthers did it by holding Redmond (4-3) to just five points in the fourth quarter. After chipping away at the Mustangs' lead for most of the night, Snohomish went ahead for the first time when senior post Emily Cassidy scored the last of her game-high 19 points with 2:35 left. Redmond had one last chance with an in-bound play under its basket with 1.6 seconds to go, but a 14-foot jumper by Colleen Betteridge caromed off the rim as the buzzer sounded.
Henderson, a junior guard, had enough energy left to carry coach Ken Roberts' 6-year-old daughter, Annika, on her back while also toting the championship trophy in one hand. "I was just thinking I've got to play hard but not be too aggressive," said Henderson, who played every minute against Redmond. Senior post Sydney Benson added 10 points for Snohomish.

Snohomish - Best 9, Henderson 12, Moore, Rathke, Marshall, Benson 10, Nicholson, Cassidy 19.
Redmond - Perugini 2, Tews 2, Radtke 8, Flynn 15, Betteridge 7, Olson, Edwards 12, Leuning 3.

Game 12 Summary: BOTHELL (from the Seattle PI)-- Even superheroes get the hiccups; they just don't last that long. The Redmond High School girls basketball team suffered through a brief offensive drought at Inglemoor last night before scoring with merciless regularity over the final 12 minutes, rolling easily to an 80-43 victory. "We're starting to find an identity," said Mustangs coach Pat Bangasser, whose team moved to 8-4 overall, 5-1 in KingCo. Whether that identity will elevate Redmond back among the state's elite teams remains to be seen. Everything about last night was elite -- 57 percent field-goal shooting, including 11 3-pointers on 18 attempts. The Mustangs forced 22 turnovers and their defense allowed Inglemoor just 14 field goals. Redmond guard McKenzie Flynn made nine of 12 shots from the floor, including three 3-pointers, and scored 23 points. The 5-foot-7 junior also dished out seven assists, nabbed three steals and made just one turnover. Junior Colleen Betteridge added 19 points, including five 3-pointers. "We feel we have something to prove," said Flynn, whose team has lost close games to top-notch programs Monroe and Snohomish this season. "Our record, I don't think, shows how good of a team we are." Redmond's record-defying illustration began early last night as it galloped to first-quarter leads of 14-4 and 23-6. By the 4:57 mark of the second quarter, when Vikings coach John Augustavo called time out, his team was down 32-8.  The margin at halftime was 27 points -- Redmond led 42-15. "We wanted to come out really strong and really fast," Flynn said. "The last few games we've come out and gotten a lead, but then we tend to lose it toward halftime." The Vikings (8-4, 3-3) were paced by junior Ashley Brown's 18 points, but the 10-2 third-quarter run she helped spark only further charged the Redmond shooters. Four 3-pointers later, the Mustangs led 58-28 and the game was all but over. "When you shoot as well as we did tonight, that helps," Flynn said.
Redmond - Isherwood 3, Ball, Perugini, C. Fishel 2, Radtke 10, Flynn 23, Betteridge 19, Olson 6, Edwards 13, Leuning 4, Ihnot.

Game 14 Summary: REDMOND -- History said one thing, but the Redmond High girls' basketball team wasn't in the mood for a history lesson. Had the Mustangs paid attention to the past, they likely would have felt the odds were stacked against them last night in their KingCo 4A game against Roosevelt, a team that handed Redmond three of its four losses last season on its way to the 4A state championship. Compounding matters was the fact that Roosevelt had won nine of the previous 10 matchups between the two schools, including a one-point victory that ended Redmond's season a year ago. Playing on their home floor last night, the Mustangs utilized the inside presence of Erika Edwards and perimeter shooting of Colleen Betteridge to pull away late and turn the chapter in a 56-47 win over the Roughriders. "It's always a good game against Roosevelt, but this time we got the 'W,' " said Betteridge, who scored 16 points.

The victory was the fifth in a row for Redmond (10-4, 7-1), and snapped the Roughriders' four-game win streak. "Whenever we play Redmond, it is a rivalry and we both come to play," Roosevelt coach Bill Resler said. "We knew there was going to be a lot of pride on the line, with us having won nine of the last 10." In the early going, that was readily apparent as Redmond stormed out to quick 9-0 lead and appeared to be in position to break the game wide open. Roosevelt wasn't going to let that happen without a struggle, however, pulling to within 33-27 by halftime. Betteridge had the hot hand in the first half with four 3-pointers and a team-high 14 points, connecting on nearly everything she threw at the rim. "She had such a good game," said Resler. "It's got to be a good feeling for her to really be the reason that they whupped Roosevelt." In the second half, Roosevelt changed its defense on the junior by putting a quicker defender on her, giving her fewer open opportunities. All that did was open up the floor for Edwards, however. Edwards, a junior, took charge as Redmond looked for the 6-foot post player inside the paint more often. She finished with a game-high 18 and came up with the shot of the game with two minutes remaining, turning a four-point lead into a more comfortable seven-point cushion with a long 3-pointer. "We ran a called play, and then we had another option off the called play," said Redmond coach Pat Bangasser of Edwards' key shot. "That really put the game away." Mackenzie Flynn added 11 for the Mustangs. Roosevelt (8-6, 5-3) was paced by 13 points apiece from Mackenzie Argens and Alex Capeloto.

Roosevelt - Capeloto 13, Mohler 2, Koerner 2, Kirkwod 4, Reiman 3, Evans 10, Argens 13.

Game 17 Summary:  REDMOND -- If last night's KingCo 4A meeting between Skyline and Redmond shaped up as a showdown at high noon, the visiting Spartans failed to show until half-past. Redmond bolted to a huge first-quarter lead and went on to a 79-62 victory that avenged its only league girls basketball loss of the season, as the Mustangs clinched at least a tie for the East Division title. Mackenzie Flynn scored 23 points and Erika Edwards and Colleen Betteridge added 22 and 17, respectively, as the Mustangs (13-4 overall, 10-1 KingCo 4A) won their eighth straight since a 50-39 loss at Skyline on Jan. 7. "It was in our heads, definitely," said Flynn, a 5-foot-7 senior who added nine assists and four steals. "It's definitely been a date on our calendar." The loss was the third in the past four games for Skyline (11-6, 7-4), which fell behind 24-7 after one quarter before playing even with the Mustangs the rest of the way. The 39 points in that first meeting was a season low for Redmond. The Mustangs matched that at halftime last night, taking command of the game with a 20-3 run to end the first period.
Redmond bolted away from a 4-4 tie three minutes into the game by forcing six turnovers and corralling 10 offensive rebounds in the decisive opening quarter. The smaller Spartans never found an answer for the 6-foot Edwards, who hauled in seven of her game-high 13 rebounds in the first quarter. Redmond coach Pat Bangasser insisted he made no major adjustments to his squad's game plan. And once the Mustangs got on a roll, he was pretty much hands-off. "Colleen was feeling it, Mackenzie was feeling it," Bangasser said of a guard tandem that combined to make six three-pointers. "Why set up an offense when they're hitting like that?" Sophomore Madison Maloney scored 15 points to lead Skyline, and junior teammate Jazmin Dickey came off the bench to add 14 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. But, despite clawing to 40-31 midway through the third quarter, the Spartans were held off by the outside shooting of Betteridge, the inside play of Edwards and the all-around brilliance of Flynn. "Last time, we let them take control and never got into our offense," Flynn said. "This time, we were ready."

Game 19 Summary: REDMOND — The top-ranked Garfield High School girls basketball team stared adversity in the face in last night's KingCo 4A showdown at Redmond. Many times. And, still, the Bulldogs came through in the rivalry game. Guards LaCale Pringle and Malia O'Neal scored 16 points apiece and Jamila Bates hauled down 18 rebounds as Garfield withstood an early test and went on to a 62-49 win over Redmond. The Bulldogs (18-1 overall, 13-0 West Division) won their ninth game in a row and accomplished their goal of sending a message to their main competition before the KingCo 4A tournament. And they did it despite falling behind by seven points late in the first half on the Mustangs' floor and losing top inside scorer Samantha Tinned early in the fourth quarter.
"We know all the players on their team and we're friends, but we know they'll always bring their 'A' game when they play us," said Bates, who led a 45-28 Garfield rebounding advantage. "We said in the locker room that we'd probably play them in KingCo and that we needed to make a statement now. "We know we'll play them again and they'd have confidence if we didn't win." The Mustangs (14-5, 11-2 East Division), who had their nine-game winning streak snapped, used a 15-2 surge to open a 30-23 lead with less than a minute to play before halftime. "The difference is we were younger last year," said Garfield coach Joyce Walker, whose team was favored to win the Class 4A state title last season but fell to KingCo rival Roosevelt in the title game. "There's a sense of belief on this team. We're going to work until we get it done." Garfield opened a 12-point lead in the third quarter by putting together a 15-4 run, but Redmond crept back within 49-43 on a Mackenzie Flynn jumper with 7:03 left. The Bulldogs shut the door with an 11-4 burst and went 6 of 7 from the free-throw line the rest of the way.
Erika Edwards piled up 19 points and 11 rebounds for Redmond, which stayed in the game with 7-of-20 shooting behind the three-point arc. Edwards sank 3 of 4 three-point shots. "We know Redmond can shoot it from out of bounds," Walker said. "We respect their shooters and they have incredible shooters. They were dictating policy in the first half. They were outhustling us." O'Neal also had eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Samantha Tinned and sister Jessica scored 10 points each.
