Katie Henderson. Like she has so many times in her career, the Mustangs senior came through. She had two huge rebounds and a blocked shot in the final 30 seconds as Redmond edged Garfield 53-48 in front of a packed home gym in a Class 4A Kingco girls basketball game Friday night. Henderson has a history of making big plays in big games. As a sophomore she hit the game-winning shot in the state semifinal win over Kennewick that ended the Lions' 56-game win streak. Last year she recorded a double-double against Enumclaw in the state tournament. ``She's a gamer,'' said Redmond coach Pat Bangasser, whose team improved to 5-0 in Kingco and 9-0 overall. ``That was a big rebound and a big block.'' Trailing most of the second half, Redmond took a 50-48 lead when Claire Pallansch scored with 1:21 left in the game. The Bulldogs (4-1, 7-2) were called for traveling with 55 seconds left, giving the ball back to the Mustangs. With the shot clock winding down, Ashley Graham drove to the hoop, but her shot was off the mark. Henderson was there for the rebound, giving Redmond another possession and forcing Garfield to foul. ``Coach told us to grab anything, be like an animal out there,'' said the USC-bound Henderson, who finished with 11 rebounds three points and two blocks. But Garfield stole the ball quickly and pushed it up the floor. Tashara Simpson drove to the basket, but Henderson was there for the block. Garfield, which didn't score in the final 6:18, commited another traveling violation with nine seconds left. Garfield coach Joyce Walker came onto the court to dispute the ball and was called for a technical foul. Jamie Edwards hit both free throws to seal the win. ``This a was just a great high school basketball game,'' Bangasser said. ``What a great environment -- a great crowd. We said before the game, `Let's go out and enjoy this.''' These teams have had close games in the past, and Friday night was no exception. Redmond beat Garfield in a winner-to-state, loser-out game at the Kingco tournament. Ashley Graham's miracle 3-pointer with no time left sent the Mustangs to the state tournament where they placed fourth. The Bulldogs stayed home, their dreams dashed. Garfield was in control of the game most of the game, and he Mustangs didn't have an answer for Bulldogs sophomore guard Malia O'Neal in the first half. She scored eight of her team's 11 points in the first quarter and scored 15 of her game-high 17 points in the first half. Edwards and company shut down O'Neal, who is Kingco's leading scoring with 19 points per game, in the second half. Keasha Beard, averaging 15 a game, scored just six points. ``Redmond is a really good team,'' said Beard, who limped around with a bandaged foot after the game. ``It came down to the wire again. I don't know, I'm still trying to figure out what happened.'' Redmond fell behind by as many as seven in the second half but continued to get the ball down low to Allison Klingerman and Pallansch. ``I was really proud of our perserverence inside,'' Bangasser said. ``We never felt we had (to go inside), we wanted to. They were in foul trouble.'' The Bulldogs had to play much of the fourth quarter without two of its posts. Lacale Pringle fouled out with 6:02 left. Then Samantha Tinned was called for her fifth foul with 3:09 remaining. That put Edwards to the line, who drained both free throws to tie the game at 50-50. Edwards finished with 12 points. Klingerman also had 12 points and six rebounds. Graham had five points and seven assists. The game went back in forth from there with Garfield scrapping and clawing, while the Redmond moved the ball inside and outside. Graham and Edwards hit back-to-back treys to take the lead with 1:16 left in the half. But O'Neal's two free throws and then a three-point play with 10 seconds remaining gave the Bulldogs a 34-32 at halftime. With 6:18 left in the game, O'Neal, drove hard to the basket and ran into Klingerman. O'Neal still managed to slip past and put up a circus shot that found its way through the hoop. That was the last time the Bulldogs scored in the game. ``We always want to beat Redmond, the best team,'' Beard said. ``Sometimes you win `em, sometimes you don't. We'll fix things and get a shot at them in the playoffs.'' Garfield - Conway 5, Beard 6, Tinned 5, Knight 10, Oneal 17, Pringle 5. The Mustangs used their depth and tall frontline to easily defeat Enumclaw 70-52 in a much-anticipated matchup at the Martin Luther King Holiday Hoopfest at Key Arena Monday. Redmond (12-0) booked a tough nonconference schedule, including defending Class 3A state champion Seattle Prep and powerhouse Bellevue in hopes of preparing for the postseason. The Mustangs had little trouble with those teams, but the Hornets, a top-10 team and regular state tournament qualifier, were supposed to be a big test Monday. The Mustangs again passed with ease. Redmond jumped out to an early lead and never relenquished it. The Mustangs led by as many as 18 in the first half and extended the lead to 28 in the fourth quarter, shocking the Hornets (9-2) who entered the game with one loss. "They beat us on the boards," said Enumclaw coach Ted Carlson, whose team lost to the Mustangs a year ago at the state tournament. "We gave up way too many offensive opportunities." Redmond outrebounded Enumclaw 54-30 with Allison Klingerman, Katie Henderson and Rachel Gillum each grabbing nine rebounds for the Mustangs. On one possession in the first half, the Mustangs had four consecutive offensive rebounds. Mackenzie Flynn finally scored on a putback to give Redmond a 29-17 advantage with 4:16 left in the first half. "That's exciting stuff," Redmond coach Pat Bangasser said. "I was really happy with a couple possessions." Redmond spread its scoring around with Ashley Graham's 13 points leading the way. Klingerman had nine points and Henderson and Gillum each had eight, but it was the bench that did most of the damage. "We don't drop off at all," said Bangasser of his bench. "We have Claire (Pallansch), Alex (Tosti) and (Mackenzie) Flynn come in today and play great. Those three could probably start for any other team." Flynn, a sophomore guard, had four points and dished out eight assists. Tosti, a junior guard, scored four consecutive baskets in the third quarter and finished with 11 points. Pallansch, another junior, scored 10 points. The Hornets couldn't get on track offensively in the first half with Jessie Christensen, Beth Christensen and Brianna Thompson combining for all of Enumclaw's 22 points in the first two quarters. Thompson led all scorers with 17 points and eight rebounds. Jessie Christensen added 11 points. "Their size down low hurt us," Carlson said. "I thought we picked it up defensively in the second half, but we couldn't capitalize on the other end." Enumclaw missed its leading scorer, senior Brittney Osborn, who is out with an injured knee. Carlson said he still doesn't know when she we will return. Redmond heads into the second half of its league schedule undefeated and a favorite to challenge for the state title. Bangasser said his biggest worry is getting out the conference tournament, which will include talented teams such as Garfield and Roosevelt. Another challenge for Bangasser could be keeping his team motivated. The Mustangs are winning games by an average of 30 points. They have scored 80 or more points six times this year. Mustangs players said they have plenty to improve upon. "I knew this team was really talented, but I never really thought about beating undefeated," Pallansch said. "We have lots of things we can still work on. We concentrated on our help-side defense today. There's always new things. We want to play every game hard and look at every team as a threat." Carlson said he was pleased with his team's effort despite the lop-sided loss. "We got whipped," he said. "But we're only going to get better." Graham also had six assists for Redmond (8-0, 13-0). ``They are so balanced in everything'' Juanita coach John Appelgate said. ``Redmond deserve all the billing they get.'' Rachel Gillum and Mackenzie Flynn played tough defense on Juanita's leading scorer Erika Ensign, who was averaging more than 15 points per game. Ensign only had three shot attempts from the floor and finished with four points. ``They denied her the ball everywhere,'' Appelgate said Redmond - Tosti 10, Petrie, Gillum 3, White 2, Pallansch 4, Radtke, Flynn 6, Klingerman 15, Henderson 2, Graham 15. Redmond 25 19 20 12 - 76 Eastlake 9 7 4 14 - 34 Return to Top or Mustangs Home Page Game 16 Summary: SEATTLE (From the Eastside Journal) -- Redmond coach Pat Bangasser breathed a long sigh of relief, then managed to smile.``Wow, what a game,'' he said with a hoarse voice. That's all anyone could say after two overtime periods and two and a half hours of unbelievable, dramatic, heart-pounding basketball. Redmond and Roosevelt, two Class 4A Kingco girls basketball powers, battled all night, but the No. 2 Mustangs found a way win, 62-56. ``This one aged me about 20 years,'' Roosevelt coach Bill Resler said afterward. ``This was a game for all time. Everyone played their hearts out.'' Redmond improved to 11-0 in Kingco's Lake Division and 16-0 overall, but Wednesday's victory over Roosevelt meant a little bit more to the Mustang seniors. Redmond hadn't defeated Roosevelt in its last six tries-- including three losses last year. The Mustangs' last win over the Roughriders was more than two years ago on Jan. 17, 2001. ``We knew they had beat us six times in a row,'' said senior guard Ashley Graham, who scored 26 points. ``They're scrappy defensively and are real good team. We knew this would be difficult.'' Wednesday's victory was more than difficult. The Mustangs were all but dead with 6.3 seconds left in regulation. Graham missed her first two of three free throws with Redmond down 46-43. After a timeout, Graham missed her final free throw on purpose and the ball deflected out of bounds off a Roosevelt player. Mackenzie Flynn inbounded the ball to Katie Henderson, who nailed a 3-pointer at the top of the key with 3.6 seconds left to tie the game and force overtime. ``Katie made another `Katie Henderson' shot,'' Bangasser said. Henderson made perhaps the biggest shot in Mustangs history two years ago at the state tournament when she scored the game-winning basket in the finals seconds to advance to the state finals and end Kennewick's 56-game win streak. Henderson, who had seven points and 12 rebounds, was 2-for-12 from the field before that shot. Each team scored four points in the first overtime, but Redmond finally pulled away in the second overtime. Roosevelt's Emiko Harris hit a 3-pointer with 1:16 to give the Roughriders a 56-55 advantage, but Graham answered with a three-point play of her own. Johanna Hase, who scored 32 points, fouled out on the play and Roosevelt was unable to recover. Hase, a 6-foot-1 senior, dominated the entire game. She scored 13 points in the first half, including her team's first eight points. She also drained a 3-pointer from halfcourt just before the halftime buzzer. ``They didn't have an answer for her tonight,'' Resler said. The Roughriders were able to keep the game close despite shooting poorly. They scored just six points in the second quarter and their first basket didn't come until 46 seconds left in the half. But Redmond just led by six. Redmond received solid minutes from Allison Klingerman, who scored 12 points despite battling a cold. Rachel Gillum had six points, eight rebounds and five steals. The Mustangs shot 12-for-24 from the free-throw line, far below their season average, Bangasser said. But he was pleased with how his team persevered. ``We trusted a lot tonight,'' he said. ``We wanted to play well, but give credit to their defense. ``I knew about their streak against us. This morning I was thinking, `Let's just get these guys finally. Let's play well and do it.''' Redmond has had only one other close game this year, which came against Garfield. The Mustangs play the Bulldogs on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Garfield High School. Graham said Wednesday's game was a perfect tune-up for Friday. ``We got a little nervous, a little scared,'' Graham said. ``We weren't as relaxed as we have been because we haven't had a lot of close games. But now we know how it's going to be.'' Roosevelt still leads in the Mountain and is confident it can compete for a state berth. ``I think we sent a message that we're still Kingco champs and we have no plans of giving it up,'' Resler said. Despite struggling from the field most of the night, the Redmond girls basketball team gutted out another victory, defeating Garfield 44-40 in a Class 4A Kingco game Friday night. The Mustangs (12-0 in the Lake Division, 17-0 overall) extended their winning streak to 19, which began last year at the state tournament. Redmond holds a comfortable three-game lead over Garfield (10-3, 14-4) in the Lake Division. The Bulldogs opened with an 11-2 lead, but the Mustangs settled down and kept it close with a strong defensive effort. ``Sometimes you have to put your head down and keep swimming,'' Redmond coach Pat Bangasser said. ``They showed composure tonight. They got down and they stuck to the plan. ``They didn't show any fear.'' Defense has been the Mustangs' strength this season. ``I think it's intimidating,'' said senior guard Jamie Edwards, who held the Bulldogs' second-leading scorer Keasha Beard to 10 points, including four in the second half. ``Our goal is to hold teams under 40 points. We watch it (opponent's total) the whole game.'' Redmond put the hammer down on Garfield in the third quarter, holding the Bulldogs to one field goal. Garfield is used to shutting down teams. On Wednesday the Bulldogs held Juanita to three field goals in the entire game. ``They really D'd up our guards,'' Garfield's Delaney Conway said. ``Their help defense is good too and they work real hard.'' Garfield sophomore guard Malia O'Neal, Kingco's leading scorer averaging 17.4 points per game, was held to 10 points and seven assists. Ashley Knight led the Bulldogs with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Redmond's defense came up big late in the fourth quarter. After Conway scored to cut the Mustangs' lead to 36-35 with 2:31 left, Redmond came up with a big stop. Sophomore Mackenzie Flynn came up with the loose ball, threw a laser the length of the court to Katie Henderson who scored on a layup. Moments later, Flynn found Allison Klingerman with another long pass to give Redmond a 40-35 with 49 seconds to play. ``It's my immediate reaction to look up the court when I get the ball,'' said Flynn, who had four points and five rebounds. ``We were so excited to play this week. We knew we had to play our best basketball, and I think tonight we proved we can play a whole 32 minutes.'' Ashley Graham was Redmond's spark on offense, scoring 16 points and dishing our five assists. Henderson also chipped in eight points.
